New York City

New York - Other Islands

Description:

Everyone knows that Manhattan is an island washed by three rivers, but even not all New Yorkers know that the “capital of the world” is an archipelago that includes, depending on the height of the tide, from thirty-six to forty-two islands. Five of the four districts of the city on all sides is washed with water - both fresh and salty. On the islands are operating and abandoned prisons, reserves, infectious hospitals, bacteriological laboratories, abandoned nuclear missile mines, mass graves of nameless / unclaimed residents of the "big apple" (more than 1,000,000 people!), picturesque lighthouses and memorials, operating and abandoned churches, the world's largest psychiatric hospital, forts and other defenses, the abandoned military town of the U.S. Army (later the Coast Guard), the prisons of "Typhorous Mary", "Bosss" Tweed, Mae West, the great jazz singer Billy Holiday and the anarchist Emma Goliday. There are regular exhibitions, installations, concerts and performances – perhaps your visit will coincide with one of these events!

The tour includes a visit to seven islands.
