Brooklyn Bridge

New York, Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge

Description:

The oldest suspension bridge in New York was built in 1883. It stretches across the East River Strait and connects two urban areas of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The decision to build the bridge was made by the city government in connection with the need to connect old Manhattan with new areas of expanding New York.

After much controversy, the architect was appointed John Roebling, who designed the bridge. Construction lasted more than 13 years. During this time, many tragic events occurred, the architect died, his son was seriously injured. The construction had to be managed by his wife, who passed orders to Washington Roebling workers.

The Brooklyn Bridge, 1,825 meters long, is divided into three stripes. Two of them are designed for road traffic, and the third, elevating, is a pedestrian zone.
