Adirondack Ridge

Keene Valley, NY 12943

Description:

The largest national park in the United States covers an area of 2.5 million hectares and includes the entire Adirondack mountain range. The park includes both private and state reserves, which are given the unusual status of “eternally wild” nature. It is officially prohibited any human activity, nature can not be sold or leased. About half of the Adirondack National Park is a wilderness that is extremely rare.

The unusual name of the park, which it received from the mountain range of the same name, is of ancient Indian origin. “Ratirontaks” literally means “they eat trees” in Mohawk language. This was the name given to other tribes living in the forests at the foot of the mountains, feeding on the bark and foliage of trees when there was not enough food. They rise in the northeastern part of the park and consist of 42 peaks connected in a chain.

The main tourist destination of the park has always been associated with mountain and ordinary skiing, dog sled travel and other winter entertainment. The western and southern parts of Adirondak are in a milder climate. It consists mostly of low hills and valleys, which have many lakes and rivers. These places were chosen by lovers of fishing and hiking.
