George Washington Bridge
Fort Washington Ave, New York, NY 10033, USA
Description:
The George Washington Bridge is one of the largest bridges in New York City, crossing the Hudson River and connecting Fort Lee and Manhattan Island. It was built in 1931 and until the Golden Gate in San Francisco in 1937 was considered the largest suspension bridge in the world. The total length of the bridge is 1,460 meters, of which the suspension part has a length of 1,090 meters, two supporting supports - 185 meters, and the width of the bridge is 35 meters. It is currently the third largest suspension bridge in the country and the fourteenth in the world.
In 1947, its reconstruction was carried out, during which, due to the increased traffic flow, two more lanes were added. In 1962, the lower tier of the bridge was opened, consisting of six lanes, the upper level remained eight-lane. Thus, the bridge became two-story. On both sides of the upper tier are areas for pedestrians and bicycles. The speed limit on the bridge is 70 kilometers per hour, although congestion often slows traffic, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.
Currently, the George Washington Bridge is the world leader in the number of traffic flows - fourteen lanes.
