Henry Hudson Bridge

Henry Hudson Bridge, Manhattan, New York

Description:

The Henry Hudson Bridge in New York City connects the Bronx to northern Manhattan.

The bridge is named after the famous explorer Henry Hudson, whose ship called "Crescent" docked to these shores in 1609. The construction of the bridge on this site was proposed in 1906, but then the public opposed, arguing that the construction will destroy part of the plantings in the local park. However, as traffic congestion increased, the need for a new bridge became more apparent, and construction began.

At the time of its opening in 1936, it was the longest arched bridge in the world - 673 meters, and the height above the river - 44 meters. This two-level bridge is equipped with seven lanes and a pedestrian path. The upper level serves the movement in the north direction, and the lower, as you can guess, is responsible for the south direction. Since 2010, a pilot program of automatic electronic fare payment has been launched.
