Hell Gate Bridge
18-01 Shore Blvd, Queens, NY, USA
Description:
The arched Hell Gate Bridge passes through the eponymous canal, which is an offshoot of the East River Strait, and connects the New York areas of Queens and the Bronx with Randall Island, which is part of Manhattan. The bridge was opened in 1916, and at that time was considered the longest steel arch bridge in the world.
In 2003, the bridge was overhauled, including the replacement of steel beams, painting and restoration of railings. Currently, it is a relatively small metal structure consisting of two railway tracks. Its total length is 298 meters, width is 30 meters, and the height of the span is 41 meters, which ensures free passage of ships under it. At the edges of the bridge, stone arched towers with a height of 65 meters are built, giving it its uniqueness and being a structurally integral part of the bridge.
The Hell Gate Bridge is located in a picturesque place, so passengers passing on it can admire the beautiful panorama of the strait against the backdrop of New York skyscrapers.
