The Verrazano Bridge, over the Narrows Strait, is one of the seven longest suspension bridges in the world. It is located in New York and connects the two urban counties of Brooklyn and Staten Island. Until 1986, the Varrazano Bridge was the longest bridge of its kind.
It was named after Giovanni Verrazano, an Italian navigator who first entered Hudson River Bay near New York City.
A large-scale project for the development of the Verrazon Bridge was carried out by the famous New York city planner Robert Moses. Construction began in 1959 and lasted five years.
Varrazano is a two-level bridge, each level has six lanes for road traffic. It consists of three sections, the length of the middle part is 1298 meters.
The distance between the surface of the water and the lower edge of the bridge is almost 70 meters, which allows you to easily pass under it any, even a very large vessel.
The Verrazan Bridge is the starting point of the New York City Runners Marathon, which has been held annually since 1976.
