San Francisco

Sightseeing tour. San Francisco + Sequoia Grove.

Description:

Admiring the views of San Francisco, we go to visit the Sequoia.

For those who see a Redwood for the first time, it seems like something that came from a fairy tale. The average diameter of the tree is two and a half meters, and sometimes up to 10-12 meters, and the height of some trees exceeds 110 meters. These giant living creatures have a long history of their existence on the planet, and similar forests of similar plants existed already in the time of the dinosaurs.

Once they were distributed throughout the world, but today their natural range is limited to a strip of foggy coast of Northern California (Sequoia sempervirens, or California) and a site in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The average age of giant Redwoods is 3-4 thousand years. Sequoia, a name belonging to the whole group of these amazing plants, is the name of the great Cherokee Indian who invented writing for this Indian people. Metasequoia and California Redwood spread in the Northern Hemisphere about 65 million years ago, but their origin is attributed much earlier, in the Upper Cretaceous period about 110 million years ago.

Since its peak at the beginning of the Tertiary Period 65 million years ago, the range of the metasequoia has declined steadily until the entire natural population is trapped in a small mountain valley in China, and the California Redwood has survived only on a narrow strip of the coast of northern California.
