Coit Tower

1 Telegraph Hill Boulevard, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA

Description:

Coit Tower is a beautiful observation deck located on top of Telegraph Hill, and a unique monument to the history of the United States during the Great Depression. It was then, in the thirties of the last century, was built Coit Tower. From the Telegraph Hill, and especially from the tower, there is a wonderful view of the city. The height of the Coit Tower along with the hill is one hundred and fifty-five meters.

The original idea of building a tower in memory of the San Francisco firefighters changed, and the tower became a kind of mini-art gallery, reflecting a new direction in the art of those years, which was called “New Taste”. The entire interior of the tower is decorated by San Francisco artists in the style of socialist realism. The motives used in the design touch upon the current problems of agriculture, education, urban and rural life, express social protest and are full of desire to inspire people to create a new ideal world. Thus, a man in one of the frescoes holds Marx’s Capital, and on the shelves behind you can see the books of Bukharin and Trotsky.

On the way back from the Tower, you can take a pleasant walk down the picturesque steep steps of Philbert Street.
