Metro Center Station
Description:
Metro Center is the central interchange station of the WMATA metro system in Washington. The decision to build this system was made in 1966, two years later construction began, and on March 27, 1976 the first stations were opened, including the Metro Center. Initially, the station was on the Red Line, later it was connected to the Blue and Orange lines. It is also possible that the Silver Line will be added to the Metro Center, the launch of which is scheduled for 2013.
As you can guess, the Metro Center station is located in the heart of Washington. The only street elevator to this station is on the west side of 12th Street, north of G Street. It is the second busiest metro station, second only to Union station. On a weekday, it passes about 30-32 thousand passengers.
Metro Center is a two-level station. On the upper level are two side platforms for the Red Line trains. The Blue and Orange trains share one central platform at the bottom.
Near this station are some of Washington’s most important attractions: the Ford Theatre, Warner Theatre, the Treasury Building, the American Development Bank, the Presbyterian Church of New York Avenue, the National Press Club, and Macy’s department store.
