Tunisian Independence Day

Description:

On March 20, 1956, France recognized the independence of Tunisia.
The history of Tunisia is very interesting. It was originally part of the Carthaginian Empire. According to legend, the Phoenicians founded the city of Carthage in 814 BC. Over time, it became the center of a powerful empire.

Beginning in 264 BC, Carthage fought wars with the Roman Empire, as a result of which it was defeated and for seven centuries was part of the Roman province of Africa.

In the V century, the territory fell under the rule of the vandals, and from the VII to the XVI century, Arab conquerors ruled the territory of modern Tunisia. After that, for some time Tunisia was under the rule of pirates, Spain, the Ottoman Empire. At the end of the XIX century, Tunisia came under the rule of France, although the Tunisian bey was considered nominally the ruler.

On March 20, 1956, France recognized the independence of Tunisia, which at the time was a constitutional monarchy. On July 25, 1957, Tunisia was declared a republic.
