Day of the Republic of Tunisia

Description:

Celebrating the end of the monarchy and the establishment of the Republic
Republic Day is celebrated in Tunisia on July 25 every year. It commemorates the end of the monarchy and the establishment of the Republic of Tunisia in 1957.

Until that moment, Tunisia was ruled for quite a long time by Arab conquerors, then it was under the rule of pirates, Spain, the Ottoman Empire. At the end of the XIX century, Tunisia came under the rule of France, although the Tunisian bey was nominally in power.

On March 20, 1956, Tunisia declared full independence. A year later, on July 25, 1957, the parliament called for the abolition of the monarchy (which meant the deposition of the Bei) and proclaimed Tunisia a republic. The first president of the country was elected Habib Bourguiba.
