Hammamet

Dougga - the splendor of the ancient Roman city

Description:

The grandeur and power of Roman rule in Tunis is the main impression of the excursion to the magnificently preserved ancient city of Dugga.

The journey begins in Hammamet. After leaving your hotel, along the expressway we will head towards the capital. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about the country, its history, culture, traditions and modern life. Without reaching the city of Tunis, we will turn west and move towards Dougga among the green hills and spacious meadows of the north of the country, if necessary, making a technical stop for coffee and a short rest.

Dugga, the ancient capital of the Numidian kingdom, is a wonderfully preserved Roman city with a mass of remarkable buildings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arriving in Dugga, we will begin a tour at the southern border of the city, where one of the most remarkable buildings - the theater of the 2nd century rises. Its acoustics are striking: the sound of a coin thrown on stage is perfectly audible on the gallery. The next stop is the Punic Mausoleum of Atebana, built before the arrival of the Romans. It is one of the few surviving buildings of the Phoenician era in Tunisia. The center of the Roman Duggi is the main temple of the Capitol, dedicated to the triad of gods: Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. On the square in front of the temple you can see a wonderful "rose of winds" with their Latin names. The temple of Saturn and the temple of Juno Celeste complement the religious buildings of the city.

Buildings that invariably arouse the keen interest of the public are the baths of Cyclops with its public toilet in the shape of a crescent (and do business, and chat with neighbors) and Trifolium - a Roman brothel, the entrance to which marks a very unambiguous symbol.

In total, there are 25 monuments in Dugg - so there is enough material for the most devoted fans of history and archaeology.

At the end of the tour, we will be able to have a snack in a tourist restaurant, and then go back.
