Cape Bon - Fertility and History
Description:
The fertile and picturesque Cape Bon is the main agricultural region of the north of Tunisia, hiding many archaeological treasures and evidence of the turbulent history of the Mediterranean. Magnificent mosaics of ancient Neapolis, a fortress-fort in Kelibia, standing on a 77-meter hill off the coast, the unique Punic city of Kerkuan, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the area “on the seven winds” of El Jauariya and the winery “Chateau Bouargub” – all this you will see during the tour.
The tour begins in Nabel, the pottery and citrus capital of Tunisia. We will visit the workshop - a ceramics store, where you can see how bizarrely colored dishes, elegant sets and spacious "tagins" for couscous are born. You can buy your favorite products, and if you are not yet set up for purchases, just take a picture among the ceramic riches. The next stop is the Archaeological Museum in Nabel, where the best examples of mosaics from ancient Neapolis are collected and the important role played by the city in gastronomy for the entire Roman Empire.
Fortress-fort in Kelibia is the next item of the program. The citadel traces its history from Punic times and has been rebuilt many times over the past 25 centuries. The last time she served in military affairs was in 1942-1943, when the headquarters of the German army was located here. But the history of the citadel is not the main thing: the dizzying view of the bay, the blue sea, merging with the horizon line - that is what invariably arouses the delight of tourists.
The tour continues on the ruins of the Punic settlement of Kerkuan. This unique place in Tunisia is the only remaining Punic city that has not been turned into a Roman settlement. The ruins were discovered only in 1975, and in 1982 Kerkuan was included in the UNESCO List. Its pearl is well-preserved home baths, lined with delicate pink plaster.
El Jauaria ("windy") is the extreme point of Cape Bon, from here to Sicily only 120 km. The picturesque area, where the foam waves of the Mediterranean Sea crash with noise against the rocks, and wind turbines of power plants rise on the hills, boasts a rich history - here are ancient Roman quarries for stone mining. We will visit these grottoes, as well as visit the exposition of a small museum, which tells about mining methods and tools used.
Our way continues along the northwestern coast of Cape Bon, along the serpentine hills, among vegetable gardens and wheat fields, to the plantations of the vine. The last stop of the tour is the winery “Chateau Bouargub”. Here we will taste the most popular varieties of Tunisian wines with light snacks. Your favorite wines can be purchased.
