Lake Tozer
North Africa, Tunisia, on the edge of the Sahara desert.
Description:
Lake Shott el-Jerid (Lake Tozer is its French/English spelling) is a drying salt lake (Schott). Lake Shott el-Jerid is a huge drainless salt basin. Most of the year it is a dry salt plain covered with a crust of salt. Water appears here only after rare rains, and then the lake briefly appears in its famous pink form. The surface of the salt marsh of the lake (an area of almost 250 km) is covered with a thick salt crust. Under sunlight, salt crystals acquire various shades - from silver to pink. Tunisians themselves like to come here in winter, when the north is cool and the Sahara is warm.
