History of the city of Didym

Geographical location and origin of name

Didim is a modern city and popular resort in the province of Aydin on the western coast of Turkey, on the shores of the Aegean Sea. It is located about 120 km south of Izmir and is known for its sandy beaches and rich antique heritage. The name "Didim" dates back to the ancient Greek Didyma (Didyma) - a sacred place where one of the most famous temples of antiquity, the Temple of Apollo, was located. It was around this sanctuary that life in the region began to form.

Ancient times.

Archaeological finds show that the first settlements on the territory of modern Didymus appeared in the Neolithic era, about 8000 years BC. Later, around the XVI century BC, Mycenaeans and Cretans appeared here, and then the Achaeans, who brought with them the Greek language and culture. This area was part of ancient Caria, a region of Asia Minor inhabited by both Carians and Ionian Greeks.

The ancient period - the flowering of the sanctuary

Ancient Didyma was not a full-fledged city, but rather a religious center, where pilgrims from all over the Aegean world flocked. Here was the oracle sanctuary of Apollo, considered the second most important after Delphi. In the IV century BC. e. on the site of an older temple began to build a grandiose building - the Temple of Apollo Didymean, which amazed with its size and architecture. The Sacred Road led to the temple, along which stood statues and sphinxes - many of them are now in museums, including the British Museum.

Hellenistic and Roman eras

After the campaigns of Alexander the Great, Didymus came under the rule of the Hellenistic states - first the Seleucids, then the Attalids, and then came under the control of the Roman Empire. The sanctuary continued to function until late antiquity, when Christianity became the dominant religion. In the Byzantine period, the importance of the temple gradually faded, and the territory fell into decline.

The Middle Ages and the Ottoman Period

After the Battle of Manzikert (1071), the Seljuk Turks began to advance into Asia Minor. By the XIII century, the Didima district became part of the Beilik Menteshe, and later - Aydinoglu. In 1413, these lands finally became part of the Ottoman Empire. At that time, the settlement was known as Yoran or Yeronda and was a small village near the ruins of an ancient temple.

XX century - the birth of a modern city

After the First World War and the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), the population was relocated: the Greeks left these places, and Turkish families from the Balkans arrived here. In 1955, a strong earthquake struck the area, destroying the old village of Yoran. The inhabitants moved a little further north and founded a new settlement called Yenichisar ("New Fortress"). With the development of tourism in the 1980s, the city began to grow rapidly and received a new name - Didym (officially since 1997).

Modern Didym

Today Didym is one of the most famous resorts of the Aegean coast of Turkey. The city combines ancient heritage and modern tourist infrastructure:

  • The main attraction is the Temple of Apollo in Didyma, whose majestic columns still tower over the city.

  • Nearby are other prominent ancient cities: Miletus, Priene and Manisa, forming the so-called Ionian archaeological triangle.

  • The resort area – Altynkum (“Golden Sand”) – is famous for its long beaches and crystal clear sea.

Interesting places for entertainment in Didym

Didyme – the pearl of the Aegean coast of Turkey

Imagine a place where the ancient columns of the Apollon temple rise to the sky, and at the foot of the noise of the azure sea. Didyme is a city where the past and the present are combined in harmony, creating a special atmosphere of peace, beauty and inspiration.

Paradise for sea and sun lovers

Didym is famous for its golden sandy beaches - not without reason the main resort area of the city is called Altinkum, which in Turkish means "Golden Sand". The beaches here stretch for kilometers, and the sea is surprisingly clean and transparent. The mild climate, warm sun and light sea breeze make the holiday comfortable at any time of the year - the swimming season lasts from May to October.

  • Altynkum is the center of beach life, ideal for families with children and those who like active rest.

  • Manastir Beach is a more secluded place for a relaxing holiday.

  • Akbuk Bay is ideal for diving and snorkeling: the sea here is like glass.

A city steeped in history

Didym is not just a resort, but an open-air museum. The main attraction is the Temple of Apollo, one of the largest ancient buildings in Asia Minor. Its colossal columns, more than 20 meters high, still amaze the imagination. When you enter the territory of the sanctuary, you feel the breath of antiquity - here you were told to kings, philosophers and travelers, and the prophecies of Apollo were considered sacred.

Near Didymus are three other famous cities of ancient Ionia:

  • Miletus – the birthplace of the philosopher Thales and the center of ancient science;

  • Priene is a magnificently preserved Greek city with an amphitheatre and temple of Athena.

  • Manisa (Magnesia) is a city with impressive ruins and picturesque hills.

All of them are only 20-30 minutes away – ideal destinations for day trips.

Atmosphere and lifestyle

Modern Didym is a cozy coastal city with promenades, cafes, restaurants and picturesque streets. Here you can enjoy a leisurely walk along the coast, have dinner by the sea, taste the freshest seafood and Turkish wines. The city has retained the authenticity of a small Mediterranean resort: it is not overwhelmed by the noise of the metropolis, but it offers everything you need - from marina yachts to boutiques and nightclubs.

Entertainment and recreation

  • Yachting and sea trips – sea tours along the Aegean coast, visiting neighboring bays and islands.

  • Diving and snorkeling are clear waters and a rich underwater world.

  • Thermal springs and spas - near the city are natural mineral springs.

  • Water park, parasailing, windsurfing - for active travelers.

  • Shopping and Turkish bazaars - spices, leather products, textiles and handmade jewelry.

Nature and surroundings

Around Didymus stretched olive groves, pine forests and blue lagoons. Here is especially beautiful at sunset: the sun sinks over the horizon, painting the sea and ancient ruins in golden tones. Many tourists come here not only for the sake of beaches, but also for the sense of silence, comfort and inspiration.

gastronomy

Didyma’s cuisine is a delight for gourmets. Fresh fish, squid, octopuses, mussels, olive oil, ripe fruits, homemade cheeses and fragrant wines are all served in coastal restaurants overlooking the sea. Don’t forget to try local delicacies:

  • Meze is a set of cold snacks.

  • "Levrek" is baked sea bass.

  • "Baklava" and "Künefe" are desserts that cannot be discarded.
