On March 25, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law “On the Security Service of Ukraine”, This day since 2001, according to Presidential Decree No. 193/2001, is celebrated as the Day of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
After the declaration of independence of Ukraine, the question arose about the need to reform the former Union-Republican system of state security agencies. On September 20, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution “On the establishment of the National Security Service of Ukraine”. The same resolution liquidated the State Security Committee of the Ukrainian SSR.
The most important areas of activity of the new Ukrainian special service are intelligence and counterintelligence.
In the structure of the SBU created the Department of counterintelligence protection of the economy of the state. The Security Service, in accordance with its competence, opposes the theft of state or collective property in especially large amounts, theft or illegal use of budgetary funds, carries out counterintelligence work in the financial and credit-banking systems, in the areas of privatization, foreign economic activity.
The Security Service of Ukraine carries out a lot of work in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, illegal migration. For the successful conduct of such operations, contacts have been established with Interpol and foreign law enforcement agencies.
The Security Service makes every effort to make the state feel confident in the European and world home. According to the legislation, information and analytical activities are carried out to assist the leadership of Ukraine in the implementation of foreign and domestic policy in the direction of restructuring the state, strengthening its defense and economic potential, expanding international cooperation.
Taking into account the tasks set, the Service is doing everything to ensure civil peace and harmony in Ukraine and that the results of its work meet the hopes of compatriots.
