International Day for the Protection of Children
Description:
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was unanimously adopted by the UN Assembly on 20 November 1989, 30 years after the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and 10 years after the International Year of the Child was declared. It outlines what actions and how States, their governments, non-governmental organizations, the media and individuals should take to ensure that children’s rights are respected for every child. Today, more than 96% of children live in countries that have pledged to protect the rights of children by ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child entered into force in Ukraine on 27 September 1991.
Over the years of independence, Ukraine has managed to develop and adopt legislation on child protection that meets European standards, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, we have not yet been able to fully implement all these legislative norms, as well as create conditions for every child to grow up healthy, developed and become a reliable person and a good citizen of Ukraine in the future.
Children are very interested in protecting their rights. For some, this is an opportunity to express their own point of view on various scales, up to the world level, for some, the main problem of implementing the rights of the child is the irresponsibility of parents.
Most children in their lives have not encountered violations of their own rights or the rights of children around them, and their experience with this problem is limited to television programs, on the basis of which they judge the world around them. Perhaps adults should think more about how to teach children to understand that it is necessary to care not only about the observance of personal rights, that any right involves duties. Only by assimilating such interdependencies can a child grow up to be a happy person.
This day is not only a fun holiday for children, but also a reminder to society about the need to adhere to the rights of the child as the main condition for the formation of a harmonious personality.
