World Press Freedom Day

Description:

Print press
“Freedom of speech is unattainable without freedom of the spirit,” said the revolutionary and writer Alexander Ivanovich Herzen (1812-1870).

According to international experts, the promotion of media freedom in Ukraine depends on the pace of denationalization of the municipal and state press, as well as the formation of a public media system.

Unresolved problems of the press in Ukraine are the tendentiousness of many publications, which is explained by the dependence of the media on owners, which is most characteristic of the regional press, the suspension of the process of concluding agreements on the principles of editorial policy between media owners and journalists, regional journalists continue to face threats.

On the eve of Press Freedom Day, the Committee to Protect Journalists analyzes the relations between the press and the authorities and sends letters to heads of state describing the problems of journalists that should be addressed.

Reporters Without Borders, an international organization that monitors the situation in more than 100 countries, annually compiles a list of “enemies of a free press.”

The main event on the holiday is the presentation of the UNESCO World Prize for contribution to the cause of free press named after Guillermo Cano. The award was founded in honor of the deceased Colombian journalist. Its size is $25,000.
