Boldin Mountains

ooh Uspensky, 17, Chernihiv, Ukraine

Description:

Boldiny Mountain is a unique historical area, which is located on the right bank of the Desna and covers its floodplain with a wide arc. These beautiful hills, whose height reaches 35 meters, are located two kilometers from the historical center of Chernihiv and are a natural dominant of the local landscape. These places have been known since ancient times and have preserved many architectural and archaeological monuments. The name of the area comes from the old Ukrainian “bolda”, which means “mountains”, or from the Old Slavic “bold”, which translates as “oak”. The remains of the once beautiful oak grove can be found here today. Our ancestors considered this tree sacred, it was in oak groves that pagan sanctuaries were located.

In the Boldiny mountains there is still a huge burial mound, dating from the 9th-11th centuries and numbering about 200 mounds. In Gulbisch, one of the two largest mounds, archaeologists have discovered the remains of the rite of cremation and an ancient sword of unusually large size, its length was 1.5 m, and weight - 10 kg.
