Monument to Hetman Mazepa

kiev, I.S. Mazepa str., near 13, metro: Arsenalnaya, Pecherskaya

Description:

In Chernihiv, a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa is installed.

The attitude towards this historical person is still very twofold. Some consider him a traitor and others a fighter for Ukraine’s independence. Back in 1998, sculptor Gennady Ershov at the expense of patrons produced a bronze bust of the Ukrainian hetman. He depicted Mazepa pressing a mace to his chest. It is a symbol of the Hetman’s struggle for independence.

However, the monument was erected only in 2009. The initiative came from the National architectural and historical reserve "Chernihiv ancient".

The place for installation was determined by the building of the local college, which is one of the oldest educational institutions in the country.

The architect of the project was Vladimir Pavlenko, Honored Architect of Ukraine, Head of the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration.

The monument was consecrated by Bishop Hilarion of Chernihiv and Nezhinsky of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.
