Chernihiv, Chernihiv region, Ukraine
Description:
Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral is part of the Chernihiv diocese of the Ukrainian Church and is a historical architectural monument. The style of construction is Ukrainian Baroque.
The construction of the temple was led by Hetman Ivan Mazepa, who allocated 10,000 gold coins from his personal treasury for this purpose. At the entrance to the cathedral there is a portrait of the Ukrainian hetman depicted in the image of John the Forerunner.
The consecration of the temple took place in 1695 together with the transfer of the miraculous icon of the Ilya Mother of God to it.
The cathedral was designed by Vilnius architect Ivan Baptiste. The cross-domed temple has 2 towers topped with a high top. The walls contain large curly windows, semicircular and triangular sandrics.
After the fires, the painting remained only on the central dome of the cathedral.
Inside are the relics of the Chernigov saints: Theodosius of Chernigov, Laurentius, Michael and Theodore, as well as some of the saints of Kievo-Pechera.
