Nicholas Cathedral

d. Chernivtsi, st. Russian, 35

Description:

Nikolaev Cathedral is one of the most popular and unusual attractions of the city. The church is also called “drunk” because of the unusual shape of the small domes – they are spiraled. The church is one of several in the world, representing the national Romanian Neo-Rominesque style.

The church was completed in 1939 and in Soviet times continued to work and served as the residence of the bishop. Due to this, the external and internal decoration is perfectly preserved in the building. In addition to the unusual and eye-catching facade, the interior of the church is also interesting. Its feature is the location of the altar - to the right of the entrance, and not in the center, as usual. You can also see beautiful stained glass windows under the domes and an ancient carved iconostasis.
