Church of St. Nicholas on the Monastery Island
monastyrsky Island, Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine.
Description:
The Church of St. Nicholas is located on the Monastery Island. It was built by Bishop Gregory, monks and Samara fishermen to save Princess Olga, who was traveling in the monastery from the weather.
At one time Prince Svyatoslav and Prince Vladimir stayed in this temple. In the spring of 1240 the church was destroyed by the Mongol-Tatar horde, but in the XV century the temple was rebuilt. After that, the building has repeatedly been destroyed. The shrine we see today was built for 2 years. First the earth was consecrated, then the first stone was laid.
The present temple was inaugurated on February 19, 1999. Here is kept the icon of St. Nicholas, made at the request of the ruling bishop. The church has a bell tower. The building itself is small, snow-white, with one dome. There is a river behind the temple. This is the pearl of the Monastery Island, whose land is considered holy.
