Transfiguration Council
Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk, October Square, 15 and
Description:
The Transfiguration Cathedral of Dnepropetrovsk is one of the architectural monuments of national importance of Ukraine. According to the architect, the cathedral was to surpass St. Peter’s Cathedral in Italy.
The history of the creation of the cathedral goes back to the distant 1786. It was planned that the cathedral will be built on a hill in the center of the city of Ekaterinoslav on the banks of the Dnieper. The project was developed by the French architect Gerois, who at that time worked in Russia at the Academy of Arts. However, the construction of the temple was completed before it could begin due to the outbreak of war between Russia and Turkey.
In 1830, a repeated solemn laying of the foundation of the cathedral took place. According to the new project, the size of the temple became six times smaller. Construction was completed in 1835.
At the beginning of the formation of Soviet power, the temple was going to be blown up, and in its place a monument to the great leader of the proletariat was to be erected. But by some miracle, the director of the local historical museum managed to persuade the administration not to do so by founding a museum of atheism in it. Under the guise of exhibits managed to preserve the unique beauty of the iconostasis and other church utensils.
Currently, the temple operates in the usual mode of church services.
