Fallen Communards Square
d. Donetsk, Voroshilov district, Artem Street
Description:
The Square of the Fallen Communards in Ukrainian Donetsk is one of the old city squares. Its inhabitants are sometimes called Kalinin Square. It was founded immediately after the construction of the Holy Transfiguration Church in the pre-revolutionary period.
In 1916, a monument to Alexander II was erected in the park, but its opening never took place. On the eve of the solemn date, the monument was blown up by representatives of the underground Bolshevik organization.
Also in the park were buried revolutionaries of 1917, which in 1957 was installed a granite monument with the inscription "Fighters for Soviet power", next to the obelisk installed a star and eternal flame.
Not far from the square in 1929, the Komsomolets cinema was built, which had to be restored again after the bombings during the Great Patriotic War.
In 2000, the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ was erected on the site of the former old Holy Transfiguration Church. It was executed according to the plan of the Ukrainian architect Wigdergaus.
