Ukraine, 84130. Svyatogorsk, Chalk Mountain on the right bank of the Seversky Donets River
Description:
Svyatogorsk State Historical and Architectural Reserve has a significant number of memorable places. Among them is the monument to Lieutenant V. M. Kamyshev – “Kamyshev Oak”. It is located on the right bank of the North Donets River on the top of the chalk mountain.
The monument is an oak tree on which the high relief of the lieutenant is made. It was opened after the end of the Second World War, in 1985, in memory of the accomplished Kamyshev feat. The monument was erected on the place where the hero died in 1943.
Vladimir Mikhailovich Kamyshev was born in 1923 in the Uzbek SSR, the city of Khiva. In 1941, he left to fight on his own.
On August 17, 1943, Kamyshev, who headed the Guard, during the battle on the Seversky Donets, occupied the defense near Mount Artem. Opening fire on the German troops, the artillery of the lieutenant did not reach the target. The reason is the lack of exact coordinates of the location of the enemy, due to the hilly terrain. Kamyshev showed ingenuity: he climbed a tall oak tree growing on a hill, where he had a good view of German positions. Transmitting the exact coordinates of the Guard, Kamyshev achieved the destruction of the fascist bunkers, by accurately hitting the target. Such bravery cost the lieutenant a mortal wound: the Germans, seeing the brave man, began shooting at the oak tree. Reaching the target, the projectile hit the oak tree and discharged its crown, and Kamyshev was wounded.
