Monument on the grave of four Stratonaut heroes

bull. Pushkina, 2, Donetsk, Donetsk region

Description:

Monument to Stratonauts is located on the grave of Stratonaut heroes in the city of Donetsk.

While stratonauts: Seraphim Kuchumov, David Stolbun, Petr Batenko and Yakov Ukrainsky rose high into the air on the substrate BVA-I, their oxygen equipment failed, as a result of which the entire crew died of suffocation. The main purpose of their flight was to study the effect of pressure on humans at high altitudes. The substrate collapsed on the territory of the cultural park of A. Shcherbakov. When it fell, it landed on high-voltage lines and exploded as it was filled with hydrogen.

The test heroes were buried at the crossroads of the 25th anniversary of the Red Army and Pushkin Boulevard. The monument was erected only in 1953. The authors of the monument were sculptors E. I. Fridman, G. L. Pivovarov, E. I. Belostotsky and architect N. K. Ivanchenko.

The monument is made in the form of a two-meter sculpture of a stratonaut, who cast his eyes on the air abyss. The statue is made of bronze, it stands on a pedestal of Labradorite. Under the statue is a memorial plaque and a five-pointed star.
