In 1962, in Bakhmut (since 1924 - the city of Artemovsk), at the initiative of the public, the city historical and local lore museum was opened, the collection of which served as the basis for the current Artemov State Museum of Local Lore.
Located in a building - a monument of history and architecture (built in 1911), before the revolution belonged to a large Bakhmut industrialist V.G. Frantsuzov, today the museum presents a unique collection of exhibits of history, life, cultural heritage of Ukraine, exhibited in 15 thematic halls, including "Life and life of peasants before the revolution", "nature of Bakhmut region", "Memorial room-museum of the Ukrainian poet M.F. Chernyavsky" and many others.
In February-March 1919, the building of the museum housed the headquarters of the city defense under the leadership of the famous revolutionary F.A. Sergeev (Artem), which is also a significant milestone in the history of the museum itself.
Of great interest are the ethnographic department of history and culture of the European community of Bakhmut-Artemovsk, a large exposition of geology and drilling named after Academician Stepanov.
Unique exhibits such as silicon cutting of the late Paleolithic era, a collection of objects and tools from the workshops of ancient metallurgists, a collection of weapons of the Bronze Age, as well as a Scythian statue of the VI century BC.
Today, the exhibition hall of the museum regularly hosts various exhibitions representing the works of Donetsk and Artemov artists. Employees of the museum carry out constant educational work, publish books, brochures on the history of their native land, create various thematic expositions. Various scientific and practical conferences are also held on the basis and on the initiative of the museum.
