Galichsky (Starostinsky castle)

Ivano-Frankivsk region, Galich

Description:

A powerful castle over the Dniester near the Galich pier, according to one version, was erected by the Volyn voivode Lubart on the site of the ancient Russian citadel, which stood on this place even in the time of Danila Galitsky. Until the XV century. the castle was one of the largest in Galicia, the garrison numbered a thousand people. In the XVII century. it withstood two sieges of the Tatars, and in 1649 was taken by the troops of B. Khmelnitsky. Reconstruction was undertaken by the Galician mayor A. Pototsky, turning wooden fortifications into a stone castle. The work was led by the Italian engineer F. Corrazini. In 1676, the castle suffered during the Polish-Turkish war, soon lost its strategic importance and was partially dismantled for building materials. Now it is part of the National Reserve "Ancient Galich". The southwestern tower and part of the defensive wall were restored, and the restoration of St. Catherine’s Chapel began. It is planned to open an exhibition of ancient weapons. Entry is free.
