The Assumption Church

Kostroma region, city district of Galich

Description:

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin was built in 1586 from the materials of the destroyed Assumption Cathedral - the main shrine of ancient Galich (the foundation of the cathedral was discovered next to the church, restoration is planned). On some stone blocks, from which the church is built, ancient Russian reliefs and graffiti were found. The initiator of the construction was the boyar M. Shumlyansky (a tombstone was discovered). Severely damaged during the Turkish invasion, the temple was restored in the XVIII century by Metropolitan I. Shumlyansky. At the same time, defense fortifications were built, fragments of which are now restored. Of great artistic value is the western portal with a pediment decorated with a stone-carved composition “The Assumption of the Virgin”.
