Governor's Palace
University Street, 16, Kharkiv, Kharkiv region, Ukraine
Description:
The Governor's Palace is an architectural monument of the XVIII century in the city of Kharkov. Currently, the building is the main building of the Ukrainian Engineering and Pedagogical Academy. Throughout its history, it also served as the main building of the Imperial University of Kharkiv.
The Governor’s House was built by order of Catherine II in 1770-1777. Initially, the project of the Moscow architect M. Tikhmenev was implemented by the city architect I.M. Vilianov, and later by P.A. Yaroslavsky.
The style of the building is a transitional form from baroque to classicism. The facade is decorated with cannelled Ionic pilasters. On both sides of the building are symmetrical arched entrances in the form of triumphal arches. The central building is above the wings and is decorated more richly.
Memorial plaques are fixed on the building in memory of I.I. Mechnikov who studied here and the participation of Kharkov students in the battles on the barricades in October 1905.
