Central Park of Culture and Recreation named after M. Gorky

Ukarina, Kharkiv region, Kharkiv, Sumy street, 81

Description:

The Central Park of Culture and Recreation named after M. Gorky in Kharkiv has an interesting history. Until 1919, it was called the Country Park, after the revolution it received the name of the Communal Park, which was relevant for that time. But at all times, whatever passions raged in the city, Kharkiv residents called it simply and affectionately City Park.

The park, located almost in the city center, occupies a huge area of 130 hectares. The first trees were planted in 1893, and ten years later, when the plants grew, the Country Nikolaevsky Park was solemnly opened for visitors. This happened in 1907.

Care for the park, as well as feasible financial assistance was carried out by ordinary students and residents of the city. Gradually, the territory of the park increased, chestnut and lime alleys were created, and the plan of the park copied the design of the Boulogne Forest.

The park received its last name in 1936, after the death of Gorky. Post-war destruction was quickly eliminated, a beautiful colonnade was built at the entrance, shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow at night, a monument was erected to the famous writer, whose name the park was named after.

Today, the park has many attractions, a summer theater, a children's railway and places for recreation and entertainment of Kharkiv residents are organized.
