Shevchenko City Garden

ooh Sumy, 35, Kharkiv, Kharkiv region

Description:

Shevchenko Garden is one of the most visited places in Kharkiv. This is a beautiful city park located in the city center, between Klochkovskaya and Sumy streets. It was founded by the founder of Kharkiv University Vasily Karazin in 1804-1805. The park was laid out in an existing natural oak grove. On the upper terrace of the Shevchenko Garden there is a landscape park, and on the lower - a beautiful botanical garden. The park was originally called the University Park. In 1808, an astronomical observatory was opened here.

In the middle of the XX century, a major reconstruction of the Shevchenko Garden was carried out under the leadership of the architect V. P. Shirshov and the dendrologist K. D. Kobessky. As a result, trees, shrubs were planted, and new alleys and a fountain were built. Currently, the main attractions of the park are the Monument to Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko, the Monument to Vasily Nazarovich Karazin, the Monument to the Repressed Kobzars, the Monument to the Football, the Monument to the Archangel Michael, as well as the Monument to the 50th Parallel and the Sculpture “Aksakal”.
