Pokrovsky Cathedral

University St., 8, Kharkiv, Kharkiv region, Ukraine

Description:

The Intercession Cathedral in Kharkov is an Orthodox church in the name of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God.

Pokrovsky Cathedral is a valuable monument of Ukrainian architecture of the second half of the XVII century. It is a baroque church with three domes. Patterned brick casings coexist with very beautiful multi-profile cornices with a small takeaway. The belt of rectangular niches is complemented by the image of the sun. The uniqueness of the cathedral lies in the fact that it combines the harmony of the structures growing from each other, rising upwards, with the harsh, imposing forms of the bell tower, which resemble a fortress tower.

In the 1920s, the cathedral was closed and began to gradually collapse. In the 1950s, a minor cosmetic repair was made. And only in 1992, the church together with the architectural complex of the Holy Pokrovsky Monastery was returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
