Proletarian square
Proletarian square, Kharkiv, Kharkiv region, Ukraine
Description:
Proletarian Square is one of the oldest central squares of Kharkiv, which arose in the XVIII century. It is located under the University slide on the left bank of the Lopan River. From the north, the square is bounded by the Cathedral Descent, from the southeast by the Rosa Luxemburg Square. From its southern part comes the Bath Lane, which leads to the Fish Square. The Merchants Bridge leads to Karl Marx Square.
Initially, the square was called the Bazaar. In the 1820s, a covered wooden market was built here. After a fire in 1835, the bazaar was removed. Work on the improvement of the square was started in the XIX century. At this time, a wooden staircase leading to the hill was built here, as well as the Sergievsky row and the Moscow row. The square became known as Sergievskaya.
In December 1886, an industrial and art museum was opened on the square. In 1890, according to the project of the famous architect A. K. Spiegel, a two-storey Nikolaevsky row was built here, as well as a chapel and stone shops. The architectural monuments are well preserved to this day.
