The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

ooh Gogol, 4, Kharkiv, Kharkiv region, Ukraine

Description:

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the numerous architectural and cultural attractions of Kharkov. This is a beautiful Catholic cathedral, originally built in 1831 by the architect N. Vereshchinsky. During the Great Patriotic War, the monastery building was destroyed. The new church in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in 1887-1892 according to the project of the famous Kharkiv engineer B. Mikhailovsky.

At the heart of the cathedral is the Baslican style with some elements of pseudo-Gothic, presented in the form of a luxurious Gothic bell tower with a round window-outlet topped with a spire. The solemn consecration of the temple took place on July 26, 1892.

In the temple there are two confessional rooms made of oak, as well as massive oak benches. On the walls there are plaster icons of the Savior’s Way of the Cross. Near the doors of the cathedral there is a jubilee metal cross and two vessels for consecrated water. At the monastery there is a parish library.
