Dormition Cathedral
Ukraine, Kharkiv, str. University, 11
Description:
This magnificent temple in honor of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, located on the banks of the Lopani River, is the oldest Orthodox church in the city of Kharkov. The first mention of it is found in the reports of the voivodes of Ofroshima in 1658. From this historical document we learn that the temple was originally wooden and had paper icons.
Only in 1685-1687 began to build a stone temple because of the dilapidated old. All construction work was led by Colonel Avdiy Grigorievich. As a result, a cruciform stone temple with five domes was built.
But in 1733 there was a major fire that significantly damaged the temple, and in 1770 the first cracks were seen. Therefore, in 1771 began to build a new square temple with five domes.
Unfortunately, in Soviet times, the domes and exquisite decor were destroyed, and the most valuable relics were removed. Only in the 50s of the XX century, restoration work began, and in 1990 the first divine service was held.
Currently, the Assumption Cathedral is the “pearl” of the city, the chimes from its bell tower can be heard throughout the city. Thanks to the installed organ and stunning acoustics, concerts of classical and sacred music are held.
