The castle was created by architects Andre del Aquo and Guillaume de Beauplan, the customer was Stanislav Konetspolsky. The castle has a square shape. From the east, south and west, the castle is surrounded by a line of defensive fortifications surrounded by a deep moat and earthen ramparts. Above the gates of the castle is carved the motto: "The crown of military labor - victory, victory - triumph, triumph - rest."

In 1720 the castle passed to Vaclav Zhevuski. He turned it into a museum, collecting many paintings, books, weapons, etc. Many festivals also took place here, some lasting weeks and ending with fireworks. Alexey Tolstoy, having visited Podgorets Castle, wrote a whole story about him.

In the XIX - early XX century the castle belonged to the family of princes Sangushkov. But because of problems with the authorities, they emigrated, and the destruction of the castle began, the Red Army defeated it and organized an army club in it. During the XIX century, the castle underwent many destructions, including a fire in 1956, but in 1997 it was transferred to the Lviv Art Gallery and its restoration began.
