Picturesque castle at the confluence of R. Hikopot in Sluch was erected in 1561 by the Volyn prince K. Ostrogsky to protect the region from the Tatars (here was held the "Black Shlyakh" of the Tatar raids). Since 1575, the castle has never been taken by attack. In 1618, he withstood the siege of 30,000 Tatar hordes. The castle was surrounded by a defensive rampart, from the land it was separated by a moat connecting the beds of two rivers. The walls were reinforced by five towers decorated in the Renaissance style.
