Ivano-Frankivsk

Town Hall

Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk

Description:

The town hall in the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk is built in the Art Nouveau style, there are few such buildings in this style in Ukraine. There is a town hall on Galitskaya Street, and in the building itself there is now a local history museum.

The beginning of the construction of the town hall belongs to the XVII century. In 1662, Andrzej Pototsky, the founder of the city of Ivano-Frankivsk (formerly the city of Stanislavov), made a corresponding decision. At first the town hall was wooden, then stone-wood, then stone. It was built from stone in 1695, it was the highest in the city. Nine of its floors, erected in the form of a cross, was crowned by a dome. Upstairs were on duty to see if there was a fire or other danger. On the lower floors there were municipal authorities, in the basements there was a prison.

In 1868, the town hall burned down. They decided to build it again, which happened by 1871. In 1915, the town hall was again damaged due to hostilities and was in emergency condition for a long time. Its long recovery stretched until 1939 because it lacked funds.

But the Germans could not blow it up, because the town hall was a reinforced concrete monolith. The damaged building was again brought to a favorable view in 1957 and given to the local history museum. In 2007, the town hall was decorated with clocks. The chimes perform 12 Ukrainian melodies.
