The Russian Gate
d. Kamenets-Podilsky, st. Russian, 93
Description:
The Russian Gate is a unique defensive structure and part of a system of urban fortifications, the only structure of this type in Eastern Europe. The gates are also part of a complex hydraulic system that flooded the canyon of the Smotrich River in case of danger.
The gate was completed in 1527 and was a complex of structures, which included eight towers and a barbican, which were connected by defensive walls, 230 meters long. Due to the floods, only four towers and a barbican remain. They were restored and today visitors can see all the details of the remaining buildings. You can also visit the potters’ workshop located in part of the gate premises.
