Samson Fountain in Kiev

p. Kontraktova, Podolsky district, Kiev, Ukraine

Description:

The Samson Fountain is one of the oldest fountains in the city of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The very first fountain Samson was at the same time the very first water pipeline of Kiev. And the first statue of Samson, who tore the lion’s mouth with his hands, appeared in 1749, according to the project of architect Ivan Grigorovich-Barsky.

But somehow everyone’s favorite fountain was suddenly dismantled in 1934. There is no reliable information on this subject, but it is rumored that they dismantled this fountain due to a simple misunderstanding. On the eve of some big holiday, one of the local chiefs inspected the city, seeing garbage near the fountain, ordered it to be removed. Subordinate people, apparently not of great mind, were frightened and confused, not knowing what the boss did not like, only garbage or a fountain, too. Since they were afraid to ask him again, not wanting to run into the wrath of the authorities, they removed not only the ill-fated garbage, but also the fountain. Just in case.

The second time the fountain was built only after half a century. On the eve of the celebration of the 1500th anniversary of Kiev, Samson was rebuilt according to a preserved copy in the National Art Museum of Ukraine. And for good reason - the fountain again fell to the liking of residents and guests of the capital of Ukraine, here they love to take pictures or just walk and relax at the fountain of the famous Samson.
