T.G. Shevchenko University Park
Ukraine, Kiev, Leo Tolstoy St., St. Tereshchenkovskaya
Description:
Shevchenko Park is a small park near the main building of the university in Kiev. There is an interesting legend about the creation of this park. In 1876, the Emperor of Brazil Don Pedro II traveled incognito to Kiev. One day out of three spent in the Ukrainian capital, the emperor devoted to a visit to the Kiev University. It is said that when Don Pedro saw the vacant lot in front of the building, he advised the officials accompanying him to arrange a park for students and professors to walk there.
The advice was heeded. The arrangement of the park was entrusted to the famous gardener Carl Christiani. In 1890, the park was opened to the first visitors. At that time, the park was called University Park. Soon it was renamed Nikolaevsky (a monument to Nicholas I was erected in the center of the park). In 1939, a monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected on the same site and the park received its current name.
Today, the Shevchenko Park is one of the most equipped Kyiv parks. The park is decorated with an unusual fountain, made in the form of the Black Sea. Near it, amateur chess players are traditionally going to play a game or two. Recently, a monument to “Grandma Classic” was erected in the park. Here is the building of the first public toilet in Kiev. Although this building is more than a hundred years old, it is still functioning.
