Lyad Gate
Description:
Lyadsky Gate is the southern gate of ancient Kiev, located on the site of modern Independence Square. The wooden gate led to the princely part of the city, also known as the Old Town. Mentioned in the chronicle of 1151 as the gate leading to the "land of Pecheneg". Also through the Lyad Gate passed the way to the Pechersk monastery and Klov. It was here that on December 4, 1240, the army of Batu Khan during the siege of Kiev was able to breach the city fortifications and break into Kiev.
The ruins of the gate were completely destroyed during the reconstruction of Independence Square (so that they would not interfere with the construction of Globe stores). It was later re-created in 2001 (in a different place). Initially, the gate was deeper and closer to the House of Trade Unions.
