Ukraine, Kyiv, St. The Tri-Holy 6. The nearest metro station is Post Square.

Description:

This majestic and beautiful monastery is mentioned in the chronicle, which describes the moment of laying the stone for the new church in honor of St. Archistratigus Michael, not far from the Dmitrievsky monastery. If we refer to chronicle sources, it happened on July 11, 1108 under the leadership of the grandson of Yaroslav the Wise, Svyatopolk Izyaslavich.

Later, a stone church was built on the site of a traditional wooden church. And under Metropolitan Michael of Kiev a monastery was created. Why is this cathedral called the Golden Height? So it was the only temple in Kiev with a gilded dome. The interior was striking with its luxury: marble finishing, amazing iridescent mosaics. There was also a shrine: from Constantinople the relics of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara were brought and donated. In the years of Soviet power, the relics were transferred to the Vladimir Cathedral, where they are now.

In general, the monastery survived the devastating Mongol-Tatar invasions, Polish and Lithuanian rule, but could not resist the communist regime. In 1937, it was blown up, and some of the frescoes were transferred to art museums.

But the story did not end there: at the end of the XX century they decided to rebuild the Golden-Domed Cathedral and restore the monastery. Now before travelers will appear majestic seven-domed temple, the area of which is 802 square meters. The bell tower was rebuilt, on which electric clocks-curantes and a special musical instrument - the carillon are installed. On the territory of the bell tower there is a museum of the history of the Mikhailovsky Golden-Domed Monastery, where the evidence of the Orthodox history of the two countries – Ukraine and Russia – is collected in bits.
