Motherland Monument
ooh January Uprising (Ivan Mazepa), 33
Description:
The monument "Motherland" is located in the center of Kiev and rises 102 meters above the ground (the Statue of Liberty in New York - 93 meters). The sculpture is among the ten tallest statues in the world. An impressive figure of a woman holds a shield with the coat of arms of the USSR in her left hand, and a sword in her right hand. It is made of stainless steel sheets. The monument was opened on Victory Day in 1981.
Do not confuse this sculpture with a monument located in Volgograd. The more famous “Motherland Calls” is slightly lower than its sister (85 meters with a pedestal), however, it is also designed by Evgeny Vuchetich. According to the original project, the monument "Motherland" was to be completely covered with gold leaf, and from its foot in the Dnieper was to flow a waterfall. However, Vuchetich died without implementing his plan.
Tourists have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful view from the observation deck on the shield, from a height of 92 meters. But we need to pass face control. As a rule, children and pregnant women are not allowed.
"Motherland" is the central figure of the National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The memorial complex occupies 10 hectares on the hill of the right bank of the Dnieper. It also includes a giant bowl of the eternal flame, an exhibition of military equipment, an alley of Hero Cities.
