kiev, M. Grushevsky St., Mariinsky Park
Description:
The monument to General Vatutin was erected on January 25, 1948 over his grave, located in the Mariinsky Park in Kiev. The creation of the monument was attended by the great architect J. B. Belopolsky and the talented sculptor E. V. Vuchetich. The figure of the great Soviet military commander is made of gray granite and installed on a pedestal of black Labradorite. Its height is 8.55 meters. Vatutin commanded the first Ukrainian front, which in 1943 liberated Kiev from enemy occupation, and then received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Every year, many locals and visitors come to the monument to pay tribute to the great general.
According to data collected from the city archives, earlier on the site of the monument in the Mariinsky Park there was a temple in honor of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky. Now the approach to the monument is decorated with two huge decorative lanterns that illuminate it at night. Local authorities are constantly monitoring the condition of the building and are planning its restoration soon.
