Independence Square
Description:
Independence Square, popularly called “Maidan”, is the main square of Kiev and the most famous square of Ukraine.
The square began to form in the thirties of the XIX century, when the remains of the defensive ramparts were destroyed. In 1876, the building of the City Duma was erected on it, in honor of which the square was called the Duma.
It is worth noting that the square has changed its name many times in its history. Before the Duma it was called Kreshchatytskaya. In 1919, it was called Soviet Square, which did not last long, since in 1935 it was renamed Kalinin Square.
Unfortunately, during World War II, the square and the surrounding streets were severely damaged. It was after the war that the square became the main city square. New buildings were built on the square in the fifties and seventies, which formed the modern appearance of the square. In particular, the building of the hotel "Ukraine" was built. In 2001, the square underwent another major restructuring.
Independence Square became widely known in the world after the famous Orange Revolution of 2004.
