Intercession
Description:
The Orthodox stone church was built in Kiev on Podil in 1772 by the architect Grigorovy-Barsky on the site of the ancient Armenian temple of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God.
The building consists of the church of the XVIII century, a bell tower, a two-storey extension created in the early nineteenth century. The temple has three domes, semicircular and high ledges on three sides. It belongs to the type of Ukrainian three-headed churches. It has round and cross-shaped windows and cornices with an elegant profile.
The Pokrovsky temple was used for various purposes at different times. From 1933 to 1946 there was a branch of the Kyiv Regional Archive. In 1946, the church was given to the Orthodox community. In 1969, the church was leased by the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments.
Most of the temple was used for warehouses, and a production shop was located in the warm church. Restoration work was carried out in the 1970s, based on historical records of the temple.
In 1981-82 the temple was restored again. Today the temple belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.
